NEW OTP authenticator app support in Secure Disk for BitLocker

Your phone is the key.
Boot BitLocker with a one-time code.

Secure Disk for BitLocker now supports OTP authenticator apps. They work like an extra BitLocker protector: before Windows starts, the user enters the username and the 6-digit code from Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or any other TOTP app, and the BitLocker-protected Windows PC boots. No extra hardware, no SMS, no internet.

  • Works like an extra BitLocker protector
  • Any TOTP app (RFC 6238)
  • No hardware tokens to buy
  • Multi-factor: phone unlock + OTP code
  • Works offline
  • From USD 50 per endpoint

Offline no SMS, push or internet
What makes it unique

Not just two-step login for apps. Our OTP protector for booting Windows.

Authenticator apps usually protect sign-ins once Windows is running. Secure Disk for BitLocker brings the one-time code to pre-boot: it works like an extra BitLocker protector, so the user can boot a BitLocker-protected Windows PC with it.

Not this

SMS codes or push approvals after Windows has started

SMS and push sign-ins depend on a mobile network or a cloud service, and they only protect accounts once Windows is running. Windows BitLocker itself offers no OTP protector for the system drive.

This

Booting the BitLocker-protected Windows PC with an OTP code

Secure Disk for BitLocker adds the OTP authenticator app as an additional way to unlock the Windows system drive, before Windows starts. The code is generated on the smartphone, changes every 30 seconds and is checked fully offline on the PC. Because the smartphone must first be unlocked with PIN or biometrics, it is multi-factor authentication.

Why OTP apps

The phone your users always carry, now at boot

01

Zero hardware cost

No tokens, cards or readers to buy, ship or replace. The smartphone your users already have is enough.

02

Use the app you already have

Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, FreeOTP or any other TOTP app following the open RFC 6238 standard. Users add one more entry, that's it.

03

Works offline

The app creates codes on the phone without a network. No SMS, no push service and no internet are needed at boot.

04

Multi-factor by design

The phone must be unlocked with PIN, fingerprint or face before the app shows the code: something you have plus something you know or are.

05

Codes expire in 30 seconds

Every code is valid only for a short time window. A code that is seen or written down is useless moments later.

06

Enrolment on first use

At the first boot, Secure Disk for BitLocker shows a QR code. The user scans it with the app, done. No hardware logistics, no waiting for deliveries.

Already use an authenticator app? Add BitLocker as one more entry.

Most users already have an authenticator app for their work and private accounts. Unlocking BitLocker with Secure Disk for BitLocker is simply one more entry in the same app, and all other entries keep working as before.

We encourage you to use the authenticator apps your users already have. No new app, no new hardware, no new habit.

How it works

From power button to desktop in four steps

1

Power on

Secure Disk for BitLocker starts its pre-boot authentication before Windows loads. The BitLocker volume stays locked.

2

Enter the username

The user types the username at the pre-boot screen.

3

Enter the OTP code

The user opens the authenticator app on the smartphone and types the current 6-digit code. Secure Disk for BitLocker verifies it, fully offline.

4

BitLocker unlocks

The drive is decrypted and Windows starts. With single sign-on, the user continues straight to the desktop.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is TOTP?
TOTP (time-based one-time password) is an open standard defined in RFC 6238. An authenticator app and Secure Disk for BitLocker share a secret during enrolment. From that secret and the current time, both calculate the same 6-digit code, which changes every 30 seconds.
Does Windows BitLocker support OTP apps on its own?
No. Windows does not offer an OTP protector for the BitLocker system drive. Secure Disk for BitLocker uses the code from the authenticator app like an extra BitLocker protector at pre-boot, so the user can boot the BitLocker-protected Windows PC with it. This is a unique feature of Secure Disk for BitLocker.
Does it need an internet connection, SMS or push notifications?
No. The authenticator app calculates the code on the smartphone without any network, and Secure Disk for BitLocker checks it locally on the PC before Windows starts. No SMS, no push service and no internet connection are needed, so it also works on the road, on a plane or in isolated networks.
Is this multi-factor authentication?
Yes. The smartphone is something the user has, and before the authenticator app shows a code, the phone must be unlocked with a PIN, fingerprint or face, which is something the user knows or is. We recommend that every phone used for OTP has a screen lock enabled.
How do users enrol their phone?
On first use. At the first boot, Secure Disk for BitLocker shows a QR code at the pre-boot screen. The user scans it with the authenticator app, and from then on enters the username and the current code. No IT appointment and no hardware shipping are needed.
Which apps can we use?
Any authenticator app that supports TOTP according to RFC 6238, for example Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or FreeOTP, as well as many password managers with a built-in authenticator. Contact us if you want us to check a specific app. System requirements are listed in our Knowledge Base.
Can users keep using their authenticator app for other accounts?
Yes. Secure Disk for BitLocker is simply one more entry in the app. All other accounts in the app keep working exactly as before.
Do we need a certificate authority or hardware tokens?
No. OTP authentication with Secure Disk for BitLocker needs no certificate authority, no PKI and no hardware tokens. Users only need a smartphone with an authenticator app.
What happens if a user loses or replaces the smartphone?
Secure Disk for BitLocker includes helpdesk functions that let IT restore access securely, without exposing the BitLocker recovery key to the user. The helpdesk removes the lost phone, and the user enrols the new phone by scanning a new QR code at the next boot.
What is the difference to FIDO2 and PIV?
PIV smartcards and tokens use X.509 certificates, FIDO2 uses dedicated hardware security keys. OTP needs no extra hardware at all, only an authenticator app on the smartphone. Secure Disk for BitLocker supports all three, so you can choose what fits each user group.
Do I need a TPM?
Yes, starting with Secure Disk for BitLocker 8 and Windows 11 a TPM 2.0 chip is required to run BitLocker. This is a great security enhancement to BitLocker and prevents brute-force attacks.
How much does it cost?
OTP authenticator app support in Secure Disk for BitLocker starts from USD 50 per endpoint. The final price depends on the number of devices and the maintenance term. Request a quote.
